Hydrating serums can help boost moisture levels, but most do not contain fatty acids or oils found in moisturisers. These ingredients retain moisture in the skin and strengthen your moisture barrier for healthy skin functions. The skin barrier keeps moisture in, and germs and pollutants out. It can be weakened by daily aggressors like UV rays, harsh weather and unsuitable skincare. When that happens, the weakened barrier allows all the nasties in, disrupting various skin functions. As a general rule, fatty acids and oils are good at retaining moisture but not all are non-comedogenic. This means they have a propensity to clog pores. Bio-compatible oils such as squalane, found in Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, is similar in molecular structure to skin’s natural lipids, allowing it to hydrate, strengthen and restore the skin barrier more easily. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream also has glacial glycoproteins derived from a microorganism found off the coast of Antarctica. The ferment extracted from this microorganism has exceptional hydrating properties and helps prevent water loss no matter the climate you’re in, making it suitable for use in Singapore or if you’re travelling to a cold country.
