The idea of being able to reach into one’s handbag at any time to indulge in some caviar might seem excessive, but that’s not stopped La Prairie from making it a reality – and the results are something many women would find hard to disagree with.
The luxury ingredient we’re speaking of here, of course, is not so much the fish roe synonymous with champagne and blinis per se, but its extract. According to the Swiss beauty label, caviar – being rich in nutrients, amino acids and antioxidants – offers a host of benefits for the complexion, particularly regenerative, hydrating as well as lifting and firming.
Cue its Skin Caviar Collection, a complete range that includes the Skin Caviar Luxe Cream, Skin Caviar Liquid Lift serum and even Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation. All anchored by caviar extract, each product comes packaged in fittingly sleek blue and silver glass bottles.
To further harness the ingredient’s properties, the brand’s used a special steam distillation process to create Caviar Water. As opposed to using standard extraction methods, this allows the crystal clear fluid to capture the "most delicate” (read: active) components of caviar and complement the efficacy of caviar extract on skin.
The first La Prairie product to boast Caviar Water is the Skin Caviar Essence- In-Lotion ($405), a cult hit for its ability to restore skin’s pH balance; and lift, firm and refine the texture of one's complexion. In addition, it primes and preps skin for the products that follow.
This means that it's perfect as a precursor to the brand's latest launch in its Skin Caviar range – one that taps on the increasingly widespread popularity and relevance of easy-to-use cushion compacts. Dubbed La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Essence-In-Foundation SPF25/PA+++ ($365), it’s the first compact foundation (and second product) to be infused with Caviar Water.
To classify it simply as makeup wouldn’t be quite right. Besides Caviar Water, it’s formulated with the brand’s signature Exclusive Cellular Complex, a secret and patented technology known to nourish skin cells and fight the effects of ageing for the appearance of a well-rested visage. Coupled with SPF25 and PA+++, which protects against UVA, and Essence- In-Foundation is more a hybrid product – as much skincare as it is a cosmetic.
Making the hydrating emulsion effective as a base is the blend of these skincare ingredients with what the brand calls “soft-focus treated coloured pigments”. The result: buildable yet natural-looking, light-to-medium coverage that’s available here in eight shades.
Housed together in its slick, air-tight (and refillable) case is a sponge with a “net-diffusing system”, said to release the right amount of foundation with a light press, making touching up on-the-go a cinch. Now, if there’s one luxury that busy, modern women would enjoy as much as having the (skincare) benefits of caviar with them in their handbags, it’s such thoughtful convenience.
