While drinking water and getting enough sleep surely matter plenty in the quest for perfect, radiant skin, we know there’s more to it than just clean living. In fact, according to experts, a brightening skincare regime is a must.

And when it comes to brightening skincare, the new generation of Shiseido White Lucent, launched in January 2016, is one to watch. White Lucent first came about in 2003 as the brand’s first global whitening line, in response to the growing demand for whitening skincare. The whitening market, which emerged in Japan in 1980s, had formed a major category in the skincare market of Japan and the rest of Asia.

Angela Boh, Associate Regional Training Director of Shiseido, explains, “While the concept of whitening initially appealed predominantly to Japanese and other Asian women, rising awareness of the skin damage caused by UV rays rapidly ignited the interest of women in Europe and America. They too then turned to whitening or brightening products to protect and enhance the appearance of their skin. Shiseido White Lucent was introduced by combining the needs of all regions to achieve the goal of attaining beautiful skin.”

White Lucent Luminizing Infuser, $90 (150 ml), uses Deep Infuse Technology, inspired by skin-whitening drips, to allow the whitening ingredients to penetrate into the skin’s deeper layers and get to hard-toreach dark spots.

To lighten dark spots precisely like undergoing a laser treatment, White Lucent MicroTargeting Spot Corrector, $155 (30 ml), encourages skin turnover so excess melanin is expelled after carefully targeting dark spots.

White Lucent Luminizing Surge, $90 (75 ml), enhances the penetration of brightening ingredient 4MSK by ion power (similar to iontophoresis), as well as whitening ingredients which are used previously.

A New Generation Of Whitening Skincare

So what exactly is the latest White Lucent range all about? For starters, it bridges the gap between whitening skincare and whitening cosmetic procedures by combining the best of both worlds as there are pros and cons to both.

Angela explains, “Aesthetic procedures usually provide instant results but there are often concerns about their side effects and the fact that the results are not long-lasting enough. Whitening skincare products improve skin concerns. They are safe and secure, and have sustained benefits. The only concern is that you do not see visible improvements as quickly.”

The new generation of White Lucent has four products, each with a different function: Luminizing Infuser (lotion), MicroTargeting Spot Corrector (serum), Luminizing Surge (night emulsion) and MultiBright Night Cream (night cream). Together, they improve the appearance of existing dark spots while preventing new ones from forming.

What’s common in the products is a unique SAKURAR esist Technology. Shiseido developed this cutting-edge technology as the research they conducted discovered that environmental aggressors like UV rays send signals to melaninproducing cells to produce melanin within skin. Overproduction of melanin can lead to the formation of dark spots.

The solution to this problem comes in the form of SAKURAR esist Technology as it suppresses the effects of these signals. The technology contains extracts from Japanese cherry blossoms, lauded for their creamy, pink-white radiance.

White Lucent skincare contains this melanin-resisting technology and an advanced aesthetic treatment-inspired technology. The individual technologies work together synergistically to produce visible results. Says Angela, “The area where dark spots appear tends to be thickened with skin surface cells. This hinders the penetration of whitening ingredients into the skin’s deeper layers. So by combining the use of all the four products, excess melanin is eliminated and the skin’s barrier function is kept healthy for greater resistance and prevention of future damage.”

Safe For All

Naturally, some people might be hesitant to use whitening products if they haven’t used them before. What makes Shiseido’s White Lucent safe? Angela says, “We make every effort to create a sense of security for consumers. We regard quality and safety as the highest priorities when we create products. From the selection of ingredients to the investigation of trial manufacturing and product testing, we conducted many diversified approaches to create high quality White Lucent products with a high level of safety.”

What’s more, Shiseido, founded in 1872, has a strong reputation as one of the pioneers of whitening in Japan. It launched its first complete whitening line called UV White way back in 1985. At that time, due to the influence of European culture, sun tanning was a popular activity. But as much as Japanese women loved the sun, exposure to UV rays led to sunburn, dark spots and freckles. “Consumers shared that they did not want sunburn to be their greatest regret after tanning. Shiseido then responded with UV White,” says Angela.

Today, whitening skincare is still more relevant than ever, and multi-tasking women who want to attain a clearer, brighter and more luminous complexion will find that the White Lucent range fits easily into their daily routine. There’s no need to spend hours undergoing cosmetics procedures to achieve better skin. Just use the products for at least a month and that #nofilter glow will be yours. W
