I came to understand that I’m never going to be the perfect mother, but I’m going to do the best I can. Same goes for everything in my life. – Shakira

Truly, a mother’s work is never done. We should all give thanks to the person who brought us into this world, for where would we be without her? But take a moment now to consider this: where does mum sit on your list of priorities?

Unfortunately, it’s human nature to take those closest to us for granted. For many of us, the hustle and bustle of daily life quickly takes over and before we realise it, mum has ended up quietly being relegated to the bottom of that list.

Even then, we know that she’ll always be there, watching and waiting from the sidelines, always ready to catch us if we fall. It doesn’t matter how old we are or how far we’ve come in life, we will always be at the top of mum’s list.

I’m a mummy to three gregarious boys today, and yet, my mother continues to worry about my well-being, often reminding me to eat better and get rest. She knows that as a time-starved working mum (like many of The Weekly’s readers), I don’t have time to cook regularly. So thrice a week, Ma whips up an amazing array of homecooked dishes at her place – and Pa brings them over for the kids to savour. Even from afar, Ma makes sure that her grandchildren will always get to enjoy the benefits of nutritious home-cooked dinners prepared with love.

So while Mother’s Day may come around just once a year, mothers should be appreciated every day, don’t you think?

To celebrate mums everywhere, The Weekly is dedicating our May issue to the woman who will always place us first — mum. This issue is packed with ideas and inspiration to make your life easier (head over to WomensWeekly.com.sg for great gift ideas and meaningful ways to show Mum just how much she means to you).

Above all, remember that while gifts are lovely tokens of appreciation, nothing beats your time and presence – it’s what means the world to her.

And mums, give yourself a big pat on the back! Parenting is a bittersweet learning journey and motherhood changes us, but oftentimes, it also brings out the superwoman in us. On behalf of The Weekly team, here’s wishing mums everywhere a Happy Mother’s Day!
