DOC TALK

One of the biggest skin concerns women have is hyperpigmentation. Dr Karen Soh, medical director of Prive Clinic, introduces a new laser treatment that works quickly, that some Asian stars are fans of.

I’m curious about the “Fan Bingbing laser”. Is it the best treatment for hyperpigmentation available?

That is the Picosure laser, which the Chinese actress is said to be a fan of. Also known as the Celebrity Pico Laser, it’s the first picosecond laser approved by the US FDA. It targets all types of pigmentation, and fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, offering an all-round solution to a clearer complexion and better skin texture.

The treatment converts laser energy into gentle pressure and combined with a super powerful lens, gives impressive results, with increased levels of collagen, elastin and radiance.

Nevertheless, the best treatment depends on one’s lifestyle, genetics and needs. At Prive, of the six laser machines we have, three (including this newest Picosure) are used to target hyperpigmentation. We may mix and match these with supplements, topical creams or chemical peels for a customised treatment that targets your concerns in the most optimal way.

I have a small tattoo which is looking a little worn now and I’d like to have it removed. To what extent can a laser treatment help?

Picosure is a step up from traditional laser procedures as it uses short bursts of energy to rapidly clear away almost all tattoos, especially black, blue and green ones that are usually difficult for other lasers to remove.

It shatters ink pigments into tiny “dust” particles, which the body gets rid of within four to six weeks. With Picosure, tattoo removal is more comfortable and requires fewer sessions. That said, individual results vary, so we’d advise you to arrange a consultation with us.

What other benefits are there to a Pico laser treatment, besides dark spot removal? Is it cheaper than other lasers, and does it work more quickly?

Picosure Focus, the machine that Prive uses, also shows promising results in treating acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improving skin tone and texture – it works by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastic fibres in skin.

There are many types of Pico lasers but Picosure has robust scientific evidence to prove its efficacy. While patients may pay a premium for it, fewer sessions are required to achieve the same results.

In our three- or six-month Prive Picosure programme, a full treatment plan is carefully tailored to every patient, that allows us to target a variety of skin issues at the same time, to make it time- and cost-efficient. Most patients who have tried it see remarkable improvements and it gives us great satisfaction to know we have made a difference.

"This laser treatment is the answer to getting clearer, spot-free, and smooth, and even skin."

Picosure vs other Pico lasers

Picosure’s revolutionary technology is designed to harness the body’s natural healing processes to help your skin. Using a patented lens, Picosure effectively converts laser energy into gentle pressure waves, which activate the body’s natural communication processes to remodel the skin, so it looks healthier and more youthful.Picosure Focus treatments are 20 times more powerful than most Pico lasers, and can effectively remove unwanted pigments while stimulating the skin to produce new collagen and elastin at the same time. This is done without very much pain or downtime, unlike other laser treatments.
