It takes determination and discipline to make changes to your diet and routine to lose weight. But shedding fat may mean that your over stretched skin loses its elasticity so it becomes wrinkled and loose. Even if you’re not intentionally losing weight, ageing and a sedentary lifestyle can result in sagging skin, cellulite, and loss of muscle tone. Dr S Reddy, medical director of Astute Medical Aesthetics & Laser Clinic, says: “Studies have shown that your dermis produces 1 per cent less collagen every year after you turn 20. This can cause collagen and elastic fibres to clump together, making it harder to avoid wrinkling and drooping skin.”

NEW-GENERATION HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

Astute Medical Aesthetics & Laser Clinic’s latest machine, the Venus Legacy, is said to help firm skin. It combines radio-frequency (RF) and magnetic pulse energies that are supposed to reduce the appearance of cellulite, tighten lax skin, smooth wrinkles, and even have a body contouring effect. The machine has four applicators that can be used interchangeably to suit the treatment area on the face or body. This helps firm and tone skin at the chin, neck and abdomen – areas which can be harder to “fix”.

During the treatment, the therapist moves the applicator in a flgureof-eight or circular movement to deliver  multipolar RF to the skin, heating it up to 39-45 deg C to deactivate stubborn fat cells and boost collagen production. At the same time, non-thermal Varipulse technology helps break down fat deposits and improve lymphatic drainage and blood circulation.

“The two technologies together have a synergistic effect, providing optimal results with minimal risk of side effects. The treatment is suitable for all skin types, although you should consult your doctor if you have conditions like rosacea or have recently had botulinum toxin or filler injections, or laser resurfacing done,” advises Dr Reddy.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As the skin surface heats up during the treatment, you may experience slight discomfort. Always let your therapist or doctor know if the sensation is becoming unbearable. The treated area may feel warm and look reddish up to two hours after.

The recommended treatment time is 15-30 minutes a session, done weekly. You could see results in six to eight sessions for the face and neck, and eight to 10 sessions for the body.

“Firmer skin can be expected after the first session. With subsequent treatments, there will be a cumulative effect in collagen production. That said, the number of sessions required to achieve each patient’s acceptable results may differ. It is recommended that you continue with monthly maintenance treatments once the desired results are achieved,” says Dr Reddy.
