Pandora had a special claw machine brought in that made for some Instagrammable shots on the night. Participants had lots of fun trying to fish out the beautiful charms encased within.

From illuminating speeches to the addition of new members to the sisterhood, the Great Women Of Our Time 2019 awards was a night to remember and would not have been possible without the unconditional support of our main presenter, Lancome, and presenter, Pandora.

Held on October 24, 2019, The Weekly paid tribute to the best and brightest women in Singapore who inspire not just through their words but also through their actions. This year’s 18 outstanding nominees were a formidable mix of fearless female leaders and game-changing voices.

So, it was only right that editor-in-chief, Barbara Koh, kicked off the party with a rousing speech that likened them to mythic goddesses.

“How apt that the awards are held here in Artemis Grill and Sky Bar.

“For those less familiar with Greek mythology, Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and goddess of the hunt. Her special powers included perfect aim with the bow and arrow, healing disease and control of nature,” Barbara shared.

“From Singapore’s first female professional boxer, to a professor and businesswoman who both desire to improve the vision and sight of people in Singapore and the needy thousands of miles away in the Himalayas, and an animal-lover fighting to save monkeys, to a woman who opens her home to take care of troubled youth – these are women hunting down their dreams and goals, who possess the very traits that Artemis was said to have. The only difference is, they don’t belong in mythology; instead, they are here tonight.”

As the cocktails flowed, courtesy of our official drinks sponsor Martell Cognac, so did the conversation on a night that one guest described as “a unique celebration of female empowerment in its purest form.”

Guest-of-honour, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of National Development, Sun Xueling, also praised the awards saying she was grateful for the chance to be part of the guest list. “I think the energy level is incredible and I’ve met so many inspiring women here tonight,” she said of the event.

“I’m also delighted to hear that this initiative has been ongoing for 14 years, with six categories each year, and three nominees in each category, you honour 18 women every year. To have done so every year, for the past 14 years, just goes to show how many talented women we have in our society.”

In all, it was an evening of glamour and gravitas that showcased the power of women and what they can achieve when they come together. The Great Women Of Our Time 2019 Sports, Health and Wellness joint-winner, Gillian Tee, hit the nail on the head when she said, “This is the time for women.” It was a sentiment that echoed as our guests mingled the night away, exchanging ideas and stories that will hopefully ignite positive change for the fairer sex everywhere.
