A BOLDER TAKE

Neutrals can be boring.

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

Neutrals can be boring. Shake things up with something different, like pops of colour (try Pantone’s 2019 Colour of the Year, Living Coral) and unexpected finishes (like gloss on the eyelids).

Sheer Shimmer

Hello, grown-up glitter eyeshadow. It’s more sophisticated, less disco, and doesn’t emphasise the fine lines around your eyes. Any colour works – blue, pink, purple, brown, even teal green. We recommend a light hand for a soft shimmery wash over the lids, but feel free to build the colour for more edginess. We like Nars Duo Eyeshadow in Kuala Lumpur ($52).

Gold Accents

Just dab a gold hue on the inner corners of your eyes. It’s not as stark as white highlighter, but still brightens and adds dimension to your eyeshadow. You can even dust a light layer on your Cupid’s bow and over the centre of your lips. Try Tarte’s Seaglass Eyeshadow in Golden Hour ($32).

Glossy Lids

Gloss on the eyelids? Why not? It’s unexpected and eye-catching. Apply a colourless gloss over your eyeshadow or just paint on a coloured eye gloss. Slick it onto your eyelids with the applicator – keep your fingers off to maintain that glazed finish. Try Butter London’s Glazen Eye Gloss in Mermaid ($35) for a bold statement.

Purple Mascara

Less girlie than pink. Less predictable than blue and brown. Use a mascara primer with a white base if you want to see the purple more clearly, advises makeup artist Alex T. Try Dior’s Diorshow Maximizer 3D ($54) to prime and thicken your lashes before slicking on Shiseido Controlledchaos Mascaraink in Purple ($50) to make your eyes pop.

Living Coral

Pantone’s Colour of the Year is the perfect shade to add to your makeup line-up. It’s a bit pink, a bit red and ideal for giving your face a rosy pop of colour. Use it on your eyelids or lips, or commit to it on both. We like Nars The Multiple in Orgasm ($60), a universallyflattering, multiuse makeup stick that can be used on lids, lips and cheeks.
