Great hair in 2019 is not about drastic changes – it’s about making small but key snips to refresh a current hairstyle.

Great hair in 2019 is not about drastic changes – it’s about making small but key snips to refresh a current hairstyle. The look fits your hair texture, not the other way around.

What it used to be: Long and wavy, with a centre parting.

What’s new: Keep the parting and the straight crown. But get a tight perm from around ear level for more volume.

Style tip: There’s no need to blowdry. Hairstylist Christvian Goh says air-drying is enough.

What it used to be: A thick, straight pixie cut with eyegrazing sideswept bangs.

What’s new: Get a slight undercut to lighten the volume, then comb everything backwards.

Style tip: Christvian recommends blow-drying the roots in different directions. Finish it off with Amos Professional’s Style Expression Craft Texture Wax ($38) so that hair holds up for the day.

What it used to be: Short side-swept bangs with long straight hair.

What’s new: A big princess perm makes straight hair look alive. Go for short, choppy bangs to counteract the too-girlie look. Then kick things up a notch with two tone colour.

Style tip: A generous amount of Schwarzkopf Professional’s Osis+ Damped Wet Look Pomade ($34) will hold the soft, bouncy curls in place, says Schwarzkopf Professional’s ambassador Jenny Lee.

What it used to be: A midlength lob with a side parting.

What’s new: Instead of one length, incorporate gentle layers so the lob is fresher and lighter. Blunt cutting the ends makes for cool-girl effortlessness, while a centre parting brings out your features.

Style tip: For maximum volume, apply a small amount of styling balm on wet hair, then blow-dry outwards for instant root lift, says Jenny. Try Schwarzkopf Professional’s Osis+ Session Label Miracle 15 ($36).

What it used to be: A bowlcut bob with straight bangs.

What’s new: An asymmetrical snip just above your nicer looking eyebrow will freshen the look, especially if you have dark hair (because long, dark bangs can look a little broody).

Styling tips: This is a wash and-wear style that you can be as creative with as you want, Christvian says. Wear it as is, or styled.

What it used to be: A bob with straight bangs.

What’s new: Go shorter but choppy. Uneven, short bangs also add texture without fuss.

Style tip: To really define the texture, Christvian recommends styling the hair quickly after blow-drying, with a finishing product like the Amos Professional Style Expression Designing Spray ($30) to seal it.
