Face Therapies: Skin-balancing

Balanced skin should ideally have a slightly acidic pH of 5.5 for it to be an effective barrier against bacteria growth and external stressors, such as environmental pollutants, while helping to lock in moisture. Here, the treatments that work towards keeping your skin balanced.

BEST DEEP-CLEANSING FACE TREATMENT (extraction included)

EDITORS’ CHOICE: Dermasonic Skin Treatment

($201.16 for 90min)

This left our pores feeling much cleaner. The therapist explained the steps thoroughly, so we felt reassured even when she was doing extractions in the eye area to remove milia seeds, which was slightly painful but bearable. The soothing ampoule, “active healing” gel and collagen mask applied after helped the redness and spots from the extractions heal within the next two days.

READERS’ CHOICE: Aqua Shine Facetherapy

($299.60 for 75min)

A microdermabrasion session usually involves the use of a diamond-tipped wand to exfoliate. This, though, is an aqua facial dermabrasion – a gentler alternative that uses serums or other liquids such as saline to clean the skin, minimise the look of enlarged pores, and help treat blemishes or UV damage. Our tester’s skin looked fresher, clearer and smoother post-treatment.

Prive Aesthetics, #03-02 Palais Renaissance (tel: 6737-0755)

BEST DEEP-CLEANSING FACE TREATMENT (extraction-free)

EDITORS’ CHOICE AND READERS’ CHOICE: Organic Deep Cleansing Facial

($170 for 60min)

Those with congested, oily skin will love this thorough cleanse. After a herbal facial steaming session, a mineral clay mask is applied to draw out impurities from pores, which are then removed with an enzyme mask. Next, a mask with nourishing and purifying ingredients is used to help balance skin. Our pores felt less clogged and cleaner after the facial, while skin looked brighter too.

Organicsbeauty, #04-27 Delfi Orchard (tel: 6734-2224)

BEST CLARIFYING PEEL

EDITORS’ CHOICE AND READERS’ CHOICE: Reveal Peel Facial

($254.66 for 30min)

Choose from three types of peeling treatments – a lactic peel for dry and dull skin, a salicylic acid peel for acne-prone skin, and a glycolic peel for sagging skin. The spa’s cosy, resort-like setting is highly relaxing, and the skilled therapist put us at ease too. Our skin looked healthier and more lustrous post-treatment, with zero redness.

Spa Symphony, #B2-50/51, 313@Somerset (tel: 6636-8878)

BEST ANTI-ACNE FACE TREATMENT

EDITORS’ CHOICE: Acne Biotic Facial

($250 for 60min)

A mix of botanical extracts supposedly helps strengthen skin’s natural defence against acne-causing microbial growth, as well as regulate sebum production and curb inflammation to restore the skin’s natural pH. The facial’s effects looked evident immediately after: skin appeared clearer and smoother, and pores, more refined.

Estetica, #06-18 Plaza Singapura (tel: 6737-2234)

READERS’ CHOICE: Blemish Control Facial

($211.86 for 120min)

Suitable for those with sensitive skin, this gentle treatment makes use of vibrating nano-sized water molecules – a patented technology from Japan – to treat stubborn acne and reduce the look of enlarged pores. Throw in a shoulder massage meant to improve lymphatic function, promote blood flow and ease stressed muscles, and this facial gets full marks for pampering.

Su Beau Derma Clinik, #03-13 to 15 Velocity@Novena Square (tel: 6252-5822)

BEST GENTLE ANTI-ACNE FACE TREATMENT

EDITORS’ CHOICE AND READERS’ CHOICE: Cellec Med IPL Treatment Facial

($813.20 for 75min)

A machine delivers intense pulsed light that targets acne-causing bacteria, and penetrates into skin’s deeper layers to break up pigmentation such as age spots and acne scars. It also stimulates collagen production, and diminishes the look of wrinkles and enlarged pores. One of our testers with combination and sensitive skin didn’t experience any downtime, and her skin looked smoother the day after. The effects lasted two weeks.

Spa Infinity, #02-486 Suntec City Mall (tel: 6738-0069)

BEST BALANCING FACIAL FOR CONGESTED SKIN

EDITORS’ CHOICE: My Purifying Pore-extraction Facial Treatment

($188 for 120min)

Expect a thoroughly clarifying treatment. Skin is first prepped for extraction with an enzyme mask, a lotion to soften whiteheads and blackheads, and a steaming session. The extraction was the gentlest we’ve experienced – we even fell asleep towards the end. The many massages, from the scalp right down to the fingertips, kept us relaxed throughout the session. While there was slight redness immediately after the facial, the look of pores was greatly reduced and skin felt super-soft for the next couple of days.

My Cozy Room Boutique Spa, 56A Cairnhill Road (tel: 6732-0030)

READERS’ CHOICE: Elemis Anti-blemish Mattify and Calm

($188 for 75min)

A revelation for oily, blemish-prone skin, this detoxifying treat combats oil and shine while rebalancing skin with Elemis skincare. The Cellular Recovery Skin Bliss Capsules Lavender is massaged into skin before exfoliation, after which the Hydra-active Soothing Gel Eye Mask, Herbal Lavender Repair Mask and S.O.S. Emergency Cream are used to soothe skin. Our tester stepped out with a clearer-looking complexion that was less blotchy and red.
