According to Levi’s Strauss & Co, the term has its roots in a 1951 incident involving Bing Crosby: the legendary singer and a friend were denied entry into a posh Canadian hotel for being in top-to-toe denim. Although Crosby was eventually recognised and allowed to stay, the episode got Levi’s to create formal denim for him. Sixty years later, denim – top and bottom – still rules, without the rules about conforming.
