This is home, truly... the strains to the Kit Chan song play in my head as I write this opening note to our August issue. It’s undoubtedly my favourite NDP tune, but I have to say that this year’s mash-up, “Our Singapore”, starring so many familiar faces, warms my heart too.

When it comes to celebrating our nation’s birthday, The Singapore Women’s Weekly unabashedly goes all out to say “We Love SG”! For our cover, Singapore icon Fann Wong is dressed head to toe in home-grown labels, and as you flip through the pages, you’ll see celebs and beauty and fashion brands doing us proud.

But what makes this issue so special are the women in it. You’ll meet the first nine nominees of this year’s Great Women Of Our Time Awards from the categories of Finance & Commerce; Science & Technology; and Sports, Health & Wellness, page 23. As you read their stories, you can’t help but be inspired by their bold, dare-to-dream-big approach to life, as well as what they’re doing in their various fields to make our life better.

Features Editor Natalya Molok also tracked down everyday heroes, including the Police Coast Guard’s Sgt Khairina Abdul Hamid Ali (right), who work to keep us safe. These “Wonder Women”, page 76, embody dedication and courage, and we salute them this National Day.

Oh, and we can’t celebrate without our favourite foods - so don’t miss the recipes for some of our top hawker dishes like chai tow kway and laksa, in “Love For Local”, page 83. I’ve tasted all the dishes we are featuring and, trust me, they are delicious.

Happy 54th, Singapore!
