THE 13TH EDITION OF SHAPE RUN WAS A ROUSING SUCCESS WITH PERFECT WEATHER, A SCENIC ROUTE AND HIGH SPIRITS ALL AROUND FROM START TO FINISH.
There are many motivations for joining a race, from clocking your personal best timing to a friendly nudge from your best friend. Since Shape Run started 13 years ago as the first allwomen’s race in Singapore, participants have been returning for various reasons, including the empowering atmosphere of journeying towards fitness goals with other strong women.
Held on August 19 this year, Shape Run drew over 7,000 participants to Gardens By The Bay East, a brand new venue for the event.
Despite the threatening skies, spirits remained high at the starting point as the 10km runners were flagged off at 6.45am, followed by the 5km runners and 3 x 5km Squad Relay teams at 7.15am. The cloudy situation turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it shielded everyone from the morning sun. Along the scenic route, which provided stunning views of the Singapore skyline, a gentle breeze cheered runners on.
Shape Fit Girl 2018 Roxanne Gan, who took part in the 10km run, said: “It was a good run with many ladies supporting one another.” Indeed, this was evident with an all-female pacing team on board.
The run was extra meaningful for first-time pacers like Wendy Sim, 30, who was part of the 80-minute pacing team. She said: “Four years back, Shape Run was the first-ever race I took part in with my sister. After that, I gradually took part in more runs with longer distances, and even completed a full marathon. This year, I wanted to try encouraging and motivating others, so becoming a pacer was perfect!”
At 8.30am, families with children under 13 years old took part in the 1.8km Family Fun Run. It was an excellent opportunity for mums to share their Shape Run experience with their kids. Lisa Twang, 35, senior PR manager, said: “It was a chance for our family to bond and enjoy the outdoors. My two-year-old had a great time, though she didn’t do any walking herself. She was happy to sit in her stroller, and be carried across the finish line by her dad!”
After the race, everyone – fun run participants included – collected a heartshaped finisher’s medal. Some made a beeline for the giant photo booth, while others indulged in retail therapy at the sponsors’ booths, which offered attractive discounts and freebies.
Those on a runner’s high joined the postrun K-Kardio workout, a dance fitness routine led by True Fitness instructors. Some lucky ones even got their photos taken with the Ang Ku Kueh Girl mascot. Thanks to Shape Run’s partnership with the homegrown brand, participants had the cutest race pack ever to mark the occasion.
