Your room is your refuge—add these five things to create a space that boosts your mood and calms your nerves.

Healing crystals

To some, crystals are more than pretty ornaments. They believe that they have healing properties that can transform the energy in your room. Yvonne Law, co-owner of Secret Crystals, recommends starting with these:

ROSE QUARTZ

“The colour pink has long been associated with love energy. Place this in your room to restore trust and harmony and encourage unconditional love.”

AMETHYST

“This all-purpose crystal is a must-have as it gives off positive, calming and peaceful energy. It can calm an overactive mind and help relieve insomnia.”

FLUORITE

“You should put this one on your desk as it can provide mental clarity and balance out the energies around you. It’s just the thing for a clear and focused mind.”

Secret Crystals is at #04-27 The Adelphi. You can also shop at secretcrystals.com.

Air plants

Breathe new life (literally) into your room with air plants. After all, they’re super easy to care for and offer plenty of benefits.

“Air plants are great for an urban setting as they’re small, require no soil and need to be watered only about once a week,” says Lee Hui Yee, founder of online plant store Float on Air. “They not only improve air quality, but also add a calming touch, which can make you feel less stressed and more optimistic.”

Scented candles

There’s more to a scent than just a pleasant smell. “A good scent can transform and elevate a space, and a familiar scent can create a comforting environment that not only brings about good vibes, but also plays a positive role in your mental well-being,” explains Nicole Su, co-founder of Hush Candle. To make your room feel like a safe haven, she recommends:

LAVENDER

“This is a classic, foolproof scent as it has soothing and calming properties. It’s best used to help you relax and unwind after a long day.”

LEMONGRASS

“This scent is light, fresh and uplifting and is a good mood booster. It makes you feel totally at ease, as if you’re having a spa day out.”

JASMINE ORANGE

“An intoxicating bouquet of floral and citrus notes, this scent is sweet and sensual and can boost your self- confidence and mood!”

Hush Candle is available at Naiise Cathay, Naiise I12 Katong, Robinsons The Heeren and TANGS. You can also shop online at hushcandle.com.

The right lighting

You probably already know that the right lighting is important. But do you know why?

“The perfect lighting can set the right mood and induce sound sleep. Poor lighting, on the other hand, can result in eye fatigue and strain, headaches, low mood and poor concentration,” explains Jitender Khurana, General Manager of Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting).

“Different lights serve different purposes. For instance, according to Harvard Health, blue light is beneficial during daylight hours as it can boost one’s attention span, reaction time and mood. However, it’s disruptive at night, unlike warm light, which creates a cosy vibe that will calm your mood as you wind down for the day,” he adds.

It may not be practical to get several different lights for your room, so Jitender recommends getting the Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance starter kit, which allows you to choose from 16 million colours and allows you to sync your lights with music and movies.

Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance starter kit is available at lazada.sg and courts.com.sg.

Soothing wall colours

The colour of the walls in your room can dramatically affect your mood, so it’s important that they’re painted in a shade that promotes good feelings. Jason Verney, founder of Purion Singapore, recommends these shades:

LIGHT GREY

“It’s commonly used as an alternative to white as it’s simple yet elegant. It can be very stylish when complemented with a monochromatic theme and is perfect for minimalists.”

SERENE GREEN

“This is a fresh and soothing colour with a botanical appeal. It can create an impression of a bigger space if you can get a bedspread of the same shade.”

BUTTER YELLOW

“This invigorating shade not only promotes warmth and energy, but also adds a light- hearted glow to your space.”
