SPHERES OF INFLUENCE

Modern designs and a new generation of stylish fans are giving classic pearls a fresh lustre.

Watch out, diamonds. Music’s fashion-forward stars – the biggest bellwethers of trends today – have a new favourite in their jewellery cases, and it’s not the ice that typically lights up everything from their pendants to their Pateks. Taking their cue from ladies who lunch, singers and rappers – from ASAP Rocky and Young Thug to Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes – have made sporting strings of pearls a thing for guys.

Making these lustrous orbs even cooler is leading Japanese pearl purveyor Mikimoto, which recently unveiled its first collection with avant-garde Japanese fashion brand Comme des Garcons (CDG). While the latter is known for its unconventional silhouettes, this new collaboration is clearly more skewed towards the commercial side.

The seven designs – all easy enough for both men and women to pull off – see pearls with silver. Some have silver links interspersed with pearls and others have a silver plate with CDG’s name. The collection marks the start of a two-year relationship between Mikimoto and CDG.
