IAN MICHAEL BLACK
AVEDA’s Global Artistic Director of Hair Color lets us in on how the pros assess your hair and how they select the best shades for you
Color Conserve Daily Color Protect, $48 for 100ml, AVEDA
On how hair colour can contour your face
“There’s been a lot of talk about contouring for faces. It’s all aimed at bringing out the best in somebody. In the past, we’ve always talked about what tones or colour palette will flatter someone. But this technique is more like framing, and if you think about a photo, whenever you stick it in a frame, it pops more,” says Black.
On Eclipting, the new colouring technique he created
“With the Eclipting service, I’m using AVEDA’s hair colours to create subtle shading placed under a fringe, or around the hairline if there are no bangs, to gently frame the face and bring out what’s beautiful about the individual.”
On how versatile this technique is
“I can do a subtle or strong version of Eclipting. It can be more commercial or more edgy,” he says. After deciding what needs to be brought out or softened in an individual’s face, Black uses a combination of foils and free-hand painting to deepen the fringe and hairline area, before adding subtle glints of colour throughout the rest of the hair.
Varying shades of copper and brown give the appearance of thicker, fuller hair
On the importance of personalisation
“If I want to show your eyes off , I’ll take it darker just under the fringe. If I want to make your face look thinner, I might extend the darkness to the sides, which creates the illusion of pushing the cheeks in a bit. Colour can also be used to off set the density of your hair,” says Black. If it’s thin, for example, layering a deeper colour underneath can create the illusion of fullness.
On his special trick
He twists portions of hair before steeping them in colour, which results in a more casual, natural effect. Best of all, this means there are no harsh lines of demarcation during the grow-out period.
Jasmine Grandifl orum from Grasse is amongst the most prized raw materials in perfumery
J'adore L'Or EDP, $240 for 40ml
If there’s a way to describe the opulent and sensual J’adore L’Or, this would be it. Imagined by François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator, he used only prized ingredients like jasmine, May rose, vanilla, ylang ylang and tuberose of the highest quality. The result? An oriental-floral scent that refl ects the pinnacle of perfumery as it uncovers the intoxicating and seductive facets of its rich ingredients. This dedication to craft is echoed in the newly designed flacon, which took five years to create. The intricate and precise engraving on the neck of the bottle makes it as much a work of art on the outside as it is on the inside.
