Brightening skincare in Asia has come a long way. A mere few years ago, the shelves were lined with creams, gels and serums that focused heavily on suppressing the formation of melanin. But thanks to non-stop product innovation and a shift in mindset, women are no longer looking for a pale complexion; they’re looking for radiance instead. Enter the new age of brightening skincare. This new crop of products are designed to not only target melanin, but also address a host of other skincare concerns like smoothness, sensitivity, open pores and dullness, to give Asian women their ideal skin: A complexion that’s even-toned, plump and glowing.

First, there has been a surge in products that focus on creating a smooth stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) to optimise light reflection for skin that appears more luminous. According to research conducted by Clé de Peau Beauté, ensuring optimal cellular turnover for smooth skin is as important as regulating melanin production in the epidermis when it comes to maintaining radiant skin. Its newly upgraded Concentrated Brightening Serum (1) is fortified with extracts of mangosteen, yeast and citrus peel to promote gradual and gentle skin turnover. Similarly, the latest Clearly Corrective Brightening and Smoothing Moisture Treatment from Kiehl’s (2) contains an optimal concentration of glycolic acid, which helps lift away dead skin cells while remaining suitable for sensitive skin types. Lancôme’s new Blanc Expert Mousse Lotion (7) also helps sweep away dead skin cells, infusing skin with soothing ingredients to prep it for any serums and creams that ensue. For those with anti-ageing concerns, try Dior Prestige White Light- In-Nectar (4). In addition to targeting melanin production and cellular renewal, it contains Dior’s exclusive White Rose to reduce sallowness and the stiffening of collagen fibres for improved radiance and elasticity.

Another common gripe among many Asian women when it comes to brightening skincare is that many brightening agents can cause dehydration or redness for those with inflammation-prone skin. Leading the pack in addressing this concern is La Mer, with the introduction of its new The Brilliance White Mask (6). This two-part mask first douses skin with the brand’s Miracle Broth, which calms skin so it is at its most receptive to the marine-based active ingredients and peptides that follow to promote glowing skin. IDS’ Illuminating Complex (10) reduces discolouration without hydroquinone (a commonly used chemical in brightening products that, while efficacious, is likely to cause skin irritation) but instead, contains moisture-binding ingredients to boost hydration and strengthen skin’s protective barrier. Similarly, Chanel’s Le Blanc Sérum Healthy Light Creator (8) also helps replenish skin lipids and reduce dark spot intensity, thanks to a combination of ume flower extract, its proprietary TXC molecule, pearl protein and nourishing oil. Or if your skin is prone to sensitivity and dryness, look to L’Occitane’s Reine Blanche Whitening Rich Cream (9). Its nourishing texture provides instant comfort to soothe uncomfortable tightness and helps rebuild skin for a plumped and radiant complexion.

As its name suggests, brightening skincare also helps combat tired, lacklustre skin. According to research carried out by Vichy, skin fatigue isn’t just the result of long working hours and late nights. In fact, external stress factors like UV rays and pollution also affect cell activity and lower cellular energy, which lead to the appearance of dull skin. Vichy’s Idéalia Lumière illuminating Moisture Essence (3) harnesses the antioxidant properties of peony root to combat these stress factors and promote blood circulation, bringing about a healthier complexion. Clarins’ updated White Plus range also imparts skin with a rosy glow, thanks to a blend of vitamin C derivative and acerola extract. Try its White Plus Pure Translucency Brightening Revive Gel (5), a multi-use night cream-mask that soothes, brightens and energises skin.
