THE “COSTUME” JEWELLERY: NOT-YOUR- USUAL CRYSTAL PIECES

Behold the Nicki Minaj of jewellery: wild, fashionably offbeat and unapologetically in your face, be it in design or size or the number of crystals dripping off them.

Behold the Nicki Minaj of jewellery: wild, fashionably offbeat and unapologetically in your face, be it in design or size or the number of crystals dripping off them. We’d be lying if we said that they’re suited for everyday wear, but – like Minaj – their appeal lies in how they’re one-of-a kind and bring instant drama. Take Miu Miu’s ear cuffs ($710), for example – so exaggerated that they create the effect of elfin ears, then accented with chin-length crystal tassels. Or Gucci’s chokers and bracelets adorned with not so much tassels, but a curtain of rhinestones. And for something even more theatrical, the increasingly hip young Parisian label Koche has a face mask as elaborate as a maharajah’s necklace. How was it pulled off? With a sheer tattoo-patterned turtle neck top and men’s style trousers. – IJ

THE BAG MAKER GEN ZS NEED TO KNOW: BONIA

Since its founding in 1974, the Singapore-based leather goods brand has been synonymous with simple yet chic bags big on dependability. Sure, it picks up on trendy flourishes (say this season’s candy pastels), but usually distils them into classic shapes so they won’t look passe next season. That hasn’t changed as it gears up for its 45th anniversary this year, but – as with many time-honoured labels – it’s also expanding its repertoire to keep the next generation attuned to its MO. Cue its Ananas camera leather satchel ($270), one of its most youthful styles yet with sorbet shades; a graphic-patterned, laser-cut strap; and embroidered motifs of – despite its name – pineapples, not bananas. A practical design with a sense of humour – how Gen Z indeed. – IJ
