My Reading Room

You remember those truly special celebrations – they might not be the most raucous or boisterous, but they are the most heartfelt. It might be a milestone birthday, marked by a home-cooked dinner with those near and dear; it might be that seemingly impossible gathering with your best mates from college days, now all living in different time zones; it might be that time you conquered a mountain with dad. These are moments we treasure, because they are few and far between, and genuine.

An exceptional celebratory drink for such momentous occasions comes in the form of The Macallan Rare Cask.

The whisky lives up to its name. Fewer than 1 per cent of the casks maturing at the distillery have been identified as fitting to bestow the Rare Cask name.

From within this exclusive selection, 16 different cask styles are chosen to create the fine casks in which the liquid gold is matured. Among them are casks that originate from cooperages and bodegas that no longer exist.

This broad spectrum of cask profiles, curated by The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno, gives the spirit a diversity and intricacy like no other.

After all, 80 per cent of the character of a Macallan whisky comes from the cask it is aged in. Like fleeting moments past – never to be replicated, yet forever treasured in the form of memories – these casks, never to be used again, leave their imprint on The Macallan Rare Cask whisky, and will be savoured for a long time to come.

A treat for the connoisseur, the mahogany red-hued Rare Case piques the taster first with soft notes of opulent vanilla and raisin on the nose. This gives way to a medley of apple, lemon and orange flavours on the palate, balanced by punchy sparks of root ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

The flavours are bound together by rounded oak, and the finish with hints of vanilla and chocolate, and a refreshing lift of citrus zest. The final taste is full, warming and woody.

Not just the perfect drink for special celebrations, it is also the perfect gift for the multi-tasking, multi-talented and multi-faceted dads on Father’s Day.

The Macallan Rare Cask retails at $475 (before GST). www.TheMacallan.com
