My Reading Room
1. Miam Miam

As far as comfort food goes, nothing can beat a bowl of soft and fluffy, piping hot rice. Miam Miam’s new range of rice bowls hit the spot with sautéed Japanese rice that’s evenly coated with flavourful special sauce. Add on your choice of protein, including shogayaki pork, $15.90, seared barramundi fillet, $16.90, or glazed teriyaki chicken, $14.90, for a hearty and delicious meal that’s sure to satisfy. We recommend the chicken – the teriyaki sauce, Wafu tofu, and thin slices of cucumber and radish make for an amazing harmony of flavours in your mouth. Craving something sweet after all that umami flavour? If you’re a big fan of sesame paste, you have to try the Kuro Goma Souffle, $10.80. Who knew black sesame seed would work so well in an airy souffle?

Miam Miam is at #02-14 Bugis Junction. Tel: 6837 0301

2. The Populus

We usually associate cafes with brunch, but The Populus is somewhere we would bookmark for a hearty dinner too. The Teriyaki Salmon Donburi, a common option you’d find at food courts, is surprisingly tasty. At $18.50, this bowl stands out with perfectly seasoned Japanese rice, flavourful furikake and mentaiko, and a piece of perfectly cooked salmon. The onsen egg is very Instavidworthy too. If you want something fancier, go for the Wagyu Beef Grain Bowl, $24, which comes with thyme-seared wagyu beef on a bed of quinoa, bulgur wheat and pearl barley – healthy and definitely worth every penny.

The Populus is at 146 Neil Road. Tel: 6635 8420

3. Ninja Bowl

Tucked away in a corner of Duxton road, Ninja Bowl specialises in donburi-inspired single-bowl dishes. Highlights include the Noka Bowl, $14, which features slices of beef cheek braised in veal jus and soy sauce for 24 hours. The tender meat melts in your mouth, and is accompanied by a medley of roasted pinenuts, semi-dried tomatoes and baby corn. If you’d like some carbs to go with your protein-packed bowl, you can choose add-ons such as Ninja Rice (a blend of Japanese rice, brown rice and seaweed flakes) and Orzo Pasta (rice-shaped pasta tossed with honey, mustard, miso and chilli). If you’re looking for a healthier choice, we also recommend the nutrient-rich White Quinoa or a large heap of garden greens as part of your meal.

Ninja Bowl is at 15 Duxton Road. Tel: 6222 8055
