When we feel like emotional crap, eating food high in fat, sugar and/or salt almost never fails to make us better, at least for a while. According to Shahram Heshmat, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois, that's because they’re associated with the security of our childhood. Treats such as chocolate also contain chemicals that activate our brain’s reward system, invoking pleasant feelings and reducing tension. Whether they bring nostalgic value or an endorphin boost, comfort food soothes negative emotions – just be careful not to go overboard into the too-full-to-move territory.
