French jeweller Chaumet reopens its historical flagship boutique that’s fit for royalty

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

Earlier this year, the French jeweller favoured by Empress Josephine for its playfully imaginative yet elegant tiaras reopened its boutique at 12 Place Vendome in Paris – an address it’s occupied since 1907. Following a year-long renovation, Chaumet’s light-filled flagship is equal parts luxury concept shop and gallery. Its modern yet cosy store interior on the lower levels subtly pay tribute to the brand’s heritage (think upholstered walls embroidered with ear of wheat motifs). There are intimate themed salons that would make clients feel like royalty when viewing the jewellery. Upstairs, what the brand calls “grand salons” are now by-invite-only destinations to view historical pieces – whether it’s the brand’s trove of nickel silver tiara maquettes or the 19th-century ceiling mural by Pierre-Victor Galland (also nephew of then-Chaumet head Jean-Baptiste Fossin) in the gold and signature Chaumet blue Salon des Perles seen here.
