My Reading Room

A collaboration between Japanese cosmetics house RMK and fashion designer Taro Horiuchi for the beauty brand’s 20th anniversary, the eight limited editions here have cases that look like those for lipstick – except they’re larger, and don’t contain lippies. They make shiny examples of how good makeup, when combined with good design, becomes better makeup that’s not only beautiful to look at, but also practical and hygienic.

Inside each case (no bigger than a portable smart-device charger) is another case: a slim compact for either eyeshadows or blushers.

That means the makeup stays where it’s supposed to – in its holder, not spilling into the silver cap, or worse, all over your bag. Attached magnetically to the underside is an applicator (sponge for eyeshadow, brush for blusher) that won’t budge however hard you shake the case. Yet, it’s easily lifted off the case with your fingers. Genius.
