Aaron Taylor, technical supervisor at Patek Philippe’s Customer Service Centre, shares three tips that will keep your mechanical watch in optimum condition.

1. Service your watch every three to five years “Degradation of lubricants after years of constant usage, and the high humidity of our local climate, are reasons to service a watch. Parts like the barrel and automatic winding wheels that are extensively used or worn out should also be replaced during every service.”

2. Protect your watch from water and dust “The effectiveness of gaskets or seals deteriorates over time, and they should be replaced to protect the watch from water and moisture. Avoiding contact with water is also important if your watch isn’t water-resistant.”

3. Avoid magnetic fields “Don’t place your watch near objects with strong magnetic fields, like stereo speakers. If your watch becomes magnetised, the timing will be affected until it is fully demagnetised.”
