My Reading Room

Tea has a long and rich history dating back thousands of years, with many around the world drinking it not only for its refreshing taste but also for its reported health and beauty benefits. Tea is known to be high in antioxidants, which fight free radicals, and can supposedly lower one’s risk of certain illnesses, such as heart disease. In particular, kombucha, a fermented black tea blend that reportedly dates back some 2,000 years, has been dubbed the immortal health elixir by the ancient Chinese because of its purported health benefits.

A fresh and modern interpretation

Inspired by the touted benefits of tea, skincare brand Fresh tasked its team of scientists with creating a modern-day elixir of immortality – for the skin. Aft er extensive research, the brand’s proprietary Black Tea Complex, billed as a powerhouse brew that marries cutting-edge science with traditional beauty remedies, was born.

Made from four potent natural ingredients – black tea ferment (kombucha), and black tea, lychee seed and blackberry leaf extracts – that work in harmony for maximum benefits, the antioxidant-rich Black Tea Complex is said to reduce the skin’s natural production of free radicals by more than 50 per cent. It also reportedly reinforces the skin’s support system, improves skin elasticity and brings back the lustre to dull skin (thanks to the high levels of tannin, known to have antiseptic properties, in it). According to the brand, the complex instantly hydrates the skin and provides continuous hydration too. Simply put, it has both protective and reparative effects.

Armed with its proprietary Black Tea Complex, Fresh launched its best-selling Black Tea range, which is grounded in the benefits of black tea – cult favourites from the range include Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask and Black Tea Firming Overnight Mas.

When dreaming about the next innovation for the Black Tea range, Fresh co-founder Lev Glazman wanted to create a universal do-it-all serum. Th e result is the Black Tea Age-delay Firming Serum ($123 for 30ml, $161 for 50ml), which is formulated with Black Tea Complex as well as a pair of peptide sequences with reported skin-firming properties. Also in the formula: Honeysuckle leaf extract obtained from a Japanese perennial vine that is one of the oldest herbal remedies in recorded history, which can supposedly strengthen the skin’s support network, and adenosine, said to support healthy cellular activity. Its revolutionary texture means it goes on silkily and does not leave a sticky film on skin – ideal for our tropical climate, and for layering under lotions and creams. And although the serum is lightweight, it remains concentrated and potent.

Due to the fluid and light texture, the serum is housed in a unique glass apothecary bottle with a special nozzle to deliver the exact dose needed (a few drops is enough for the entire face).

Fresh Black Tea Age-delay Firming Serum and other products in the range are available at Fresh boutiques at Ion Orchard and Raffles City Shopping Centre, and all Sephora stores.
