2017 Begins In February For Me

The period that I like, yet dislike the most: the last two weeks of December till the end of January of the new year.

My Reading Room

During those six weeks, it’s perhaps the worst time to be a monthly editorial: Everyone is in a holiday mood or trying to get over the holiday mood, and deadlines are a killjoy.

My enthusiasm for a fresh start only kicks in in Feb. First, it’s a shorter month. Second, all the festive sales and the maddening crowds are over. Third, that’s when I see S/S ’17 runway looks fully translated at the stores. And it’s still a pleasure to me: to see the styles, looks and ideas as a consumer, not as a professional fashion critic.

So what am I particularly keen on this month? A necklace pendant, a locket or a tee/pullover with the word “love” on it, and it’s not because V-Day is in Feb – though because of it, there are so many “loves” to choose from. It’s because in the current climate of uncertainties (and there will be many this year), I feel it serves as a reminder that we should surround ourselves with people, beliefs and things we love.

When I interviewed American designer Michael Kors recently, one of his favourite pieces from his S/S ’17 collection is the “love” sweater. He said: “I think the ‘love’ sweater is one of those pieces that is extremely relevant right now, but will also be something you wear forever, that you reach for day in and day out.”
