HAVING SWEETENED DRINKS DAILY

Your daily milk tea might be a sweet end to your lunch, but it spells trouble for your skin. Too much sugar in your bloodstream damages collagen, an important protein fibre that preserves the softness of your skin. Keep your skin bouncy by reducing your intake of these sweetened beverages – they’re bad news for your waistline anyway.

USING A STRAW

If you’re always drinking with a straw, it’s time to rethink that habit. The sucking action you make with pursed lips tenses up the muscles around your mouth, making it easier for smile lines to appear. Doing away with straws also means you are cutting down on plastic waste.

APPLYING MAKEUP FORCEFULLY

Each time you blend concealer impatiently, you’re tugging at your delicate skin (especially your under-eye area), causing wrinkles to form more readily. Instead of going all out, dab lightly at your skin. This ensures a more even application too.

SKIPPING SPF

SPF is essential to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays – something we get in abundance on this sunny island. Work sunscreen into your face and neck daily to maintain youthful skin. Studies have shown that regular use of sunscreen protects your skin from ageing.

FROWNING

Furrowing your brows or clenching your jaws tenses up your muscles unnecessarily, causing wrinkles to form easily around your eyes and mouth. Learn to relax your facial muscles – like what you’re asked to do during corpse pose in yoga – and you will look less aged in the long run.

USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE

Another peril of using your mobile phone excessively? Neck lines. Gazing at the screen for long hours often means you’re pressing your chin into your neck for a prolonged period. Other than getting a dreaded double chin, lines will also form prematurely on your neck over time.

SLEEPING ON YOUR SIDE

It feels super comfy to bury your face into the pillow while dozing off, but that pressure results in lots of tugging and pulling on your delicate facial muscles. The same goes for snoozing on your stomach – you have a high chance of incurring neck pain, too. Where possible, sleep on your back.
