Highlights Of TheYear

When the newest beauty products arrive on our desks it always makes our day, and every new product launch gives us a reason to live (or rather, to do our jobs). But now and then, certain high-octane events and launches get us super-excited, and these are the ones that make up our beauty highlights of the year.

MOST TRANSFORMATIVE COSMETICS BRAND MAKEOVER

SHISEIDO

It takes guts and immense confidence for a brand this established to overhaul its entire makeup collection. Shiseido didn’t just discontinue one or two colours or retire a handful of products. It completely removed its entire makeup collection of some 200-plus items, replacing it with 137 new items and a fresh new philosophy and direction. The makeup now falls under more intuitive categories and is organised by texture. Every item has a purpose and a clear function in your makeup arsenal. What a way to reassert its presence on the beauty stage.

MOST CUSTOMISABLE MAKEUP BRAND

ETUDE HOUSE

This goes way beyond choosing colours for a palette. Pick from a range of too-cute lipstick cases; mix and match the lip colour you want with the texture you want; combine a lipstick with a glittery lip topper in a handy dual-ended case (the cases come in different designs, of course); or have your cushion foundation in the same compact as your primer, concealer, blusher or highlighter.

MOST EXCITING POP-UP EXPERIENCE

CHANEL COCO GAME CENTER

Trust Chanel to take things to the next level. In 2017, the beauty brand brought us Coco Cafe, a retail pop-up melded with a chic Parisian cafe, serving beverages and the prettiest cakes alongside the brand’s makeup, perfumes and skincare. For 2018, Chanel changed the pop-up retail concept to that of an arcade, with real games you could play and lots of Instagram mable backdrops and setups. We can’t wait to see what it has up its sleeve for the next pop-up.

BEST BEAUTY STORE EXPERIENCE

MAISON CHRISTIAN DIOR

Its white marble counters, cool grey tones and pale wood flooring make for an elegant but inviting space to indulge in the fashion house’s perfumery offerings, many of which tie in with the life story of Dior himself. From premium fragrances and scented candles to soaps, body creams and silk scarves for scenting, this is the place to go for a taste of the luxury Parisian life the brand stands for.
