My Reading Room
FIT FOR A KING

Upmarket South Korean skincare brand History of Whoo (“whoo” has been anglicised and it means “empress”) draws upon historical skincare recipes of royalty and national figureheads for its products with natural anti-age ingredients. Cognac lovers will find the men’s line familiar – the bottles are styled after such carafes for masculine overtones. The Ja Yang Skin Serum contains ginseng cordyceps that is said to regulate cell oxidation, plus a concoction of tea-based ingredients that aims to keep skin taut. Bonus points for the musky scent and clean feel after application. Available at Tangs Plaza Level 1, or at www.tangs.com.

TWO-IN-ONE

Korean brand Sulwhasoo has improved the formulas of its men’s line-up. Front and centre is the Inner Charging Serum, which doubles as toner. That cuts out one step and saves precious time for busy executives. Its woody notes of pine and sandalwood remain for hours after application, as does the hydrating effect. www.sulwhasoo.com/sg

MAN’S BEST FRIEND

The dark and unassuming packaging of Singaporebased Allies of Skin products reflects how founder Nicolas Travis wants skincare to be: fussfree. There are just three products in this line: the leave-on 1A All-Day Mask, 1A Night Mask to wear to bed, and the Molecular Saviour Toner Mist to refresh the face when needed. Use any brand’s cleanser in between, Travis says. www.alliesofskin.com

CELLULAR DATA

When a stem cell company branches out into cosmetics, you know it’s got the science aspect covered. Homegrown firm Calecim Professional’s Multi-action Cream promises to improve skin texture by promoting stem cell activity. The unscented cream has been found to close wounds in short order too. www.calecim.com

DOCTOR KNOWS BEST

Local aesthetics doctor Kevin Chua was using thirdparty skincare products for the better part of a decade, until he decided they didn’t cut it anymore and started his eponymous line. His HA Collagen Cream is aimed at plumping skin upon application and is said to smooth lines after prolonged usage. www.kevinchua.com.sg
