Everyone starts to notice different skin problems as they age, but a universal concern is dehydration. The culprit is an impaired moisture barrier. The moisture barrier is a layer of dead skin cells stuck together with ceramides and other lipids. It protects skin from external aggressors and reduces the amount of water that evaporates. As we age, our production of lipids declines, so the moisture barrier develops gaps. The result? Dry, uncomfortable, aky skin that is vulnerable to damage and loses its glow.

ASTALIFT’s Jelly Aquarysta was launched in Japan in 2010, with a formulation based on nanoparticles – ASTALIFT is owned by FUJIFILM, which has spent decades researching nanotechnology, collagen and oxidation. In 2014, Jelly Aquarysta was awarded the Invention Award by Japan’s Institute of Invention and Innovation. The award is given to technology that contributes to the development of science. Fumi Kusuda, the brand’s product researcher and planner, explains what makes it so innovative.

Q: WHAT MADE THE ORIGINAL JELLY AQUARYSTA STAND OUT FROM OTHER PRODUCTS?

It had ceramides , which are commonly used in skincare, but Jelly Aquarysta’s ceramides were identical to those of human skin, and were tiny – nanosized. This means they were able to extensivel penetrate the skin’s moisture barrier, lling the gaps to restore its function.

Q: SO WHY HAS ASTALIFT REVAMPED THE FORMULATION?

Nanoceramides can effectively ll gaps in an area of the moisture barrier known as the Short Periodicity Phase (SPP), but cannot reach the Long Periodicity Phase (LPP). To target the LPP, we have revamped Jelly Aquarysta with another lipid, nano acyl ceramide. This is the world’s smallest moisture-locking lipid, which allows for six times greater penetration of ingredients. The ingredients can now penetrate every part of the barrier, boosting its moisture-retaining ability.

Q: WHAT ELSE DOES JELLY AQUARYSTA INCLUDE?

The powered-up product also has two nanosized antioxidants: astaxanthin and lycopene. These are more powerful than CoQ10, one of the most commonly used antioxidants in skincare, and they can neutralise free radicals 1,000 times as quickly.

Q: HOW DO I USE THIS PRODUCT? AND WHY DOES IT HAVE A JELLY TEXTURE?

A jelly texture is the best way to stabilise the ingredients. To use, scoop a pearl-sized amount of the damask rose-scented jelly from the jar and apply after cleanser and before lotion. Within a minute, the jelly surface in the jar will repair itself, looking as good as new. After a month’s use, your skin will look rm, glowing and hydrated, with increased lustre.
