My Reading Room

Hair loss is common – it affects one in three women at some point in their lives, and can be caused by multiple factors, including heredity, stress, lack of protein, and over-styling. According to a July 2015 survey conducted in Singapore by market research firm Euromonitor International, 79 per cent of women who suffer from hair thinning believe they are less happy than they could be, and 96 per cent feel that their hair is connected to their sense of beauty. Hair loss and thinning can also be just as traumatic to men, who may end up losing confidence too.

STRONG START

One way to tackle hair loss and thinning is ensuring that new hair grows healthy and strong. Viviscal Professional Hair Nutritional Supplement may be new to Singapore, but it has been around for more than 20 years. Originally developed in Scandinavia, it is drug-free and there is no prescription needed. Active ingredients include AminoMar C™ marine complex, which helps to nourish thinning hair and promotes growth, and biotin, which helps metabolise amino acids, the building blocks of protein that make up hair. According to the brand, the supplement minimises hair loss and breakage, and can strengthen nails too.

TRIED AND TESTED

Twelve clinical studies have been conducted on the product. In a trial conducted in Brazil, 92 per cent of 52 people said their hair became thicker aft er six months of using it. A double-blind, placebo-controlled test carried out in the US demonstrated an 18.3 per cent* reduction in hair loss aft er just three months.

Celebs who have tried the oral supplements are convinced – fans include women with enviable hair, such as supermodel Karlie Kloss, singer Christina Aguilera and actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Suitable for both men and women with any kind of hair thinning or loss, the product is designed to maintain and restore health to your hair – and your confidence too.

Three tips for healthy hair
Experts recommend these lifestyle changes to boost your hair condition.

1. Skip the heat The hottest setting on your hairdryer might dry your locks faster, but it can also damage strands, leaving them prone to breakage. Instead, use medium heat and allow hair to air-dry naturally when possible.

2. Up your protein intake Hair is made mostly of protein, so ensure you have plenty in your diet. Good sources include chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, legumes and nuts.

3. Be gentle when you dry Even something as seemingly innocuous as towelling your hair dry can damage it. To preserve your locks, dry them with a super-absorbent microfibre towel.
