My Reading Room

Anyone who’s interested in skincare and beauty is aware that the skin’s epidermis is the top layer, where melanin is produced, and the dermis is the middle layer, where both melanin and collagen are produced. Now, there’s another term to know: superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS). It’s the layer of connective tissue between the muscle and the skin/fat of the face. With age, it loosens and succumbs to gravity, so the skin begins to sag. Traditionally, the only way to counter this would be a surgical facelift .

The Ultraformer HIFU is engineered with the aim of allowing focused ultrasound waves to penetrate skin more deeply, stimulating the tightening of collagen fibres for natural firming results.

NON-INVASIVE TREATMENT
Those who prefer not to go under the knife can consider non-invasive options such as treatments using the Ultraformer HIFU, a non-surgical device that employs focused ultrasound to heat skin at various depths. It can reach 4.5mm below the skin surface – right down to the SMAS, and according to the brand, the deepest any non-invasive lift ing devices can. Th is provides more effectiveness in lifting and tightening of the skin.
Dr Tan Ying Zhou of Simplistiq Aesthetic Clinic says that using this device, he can address a range of concerns through face and neck lifting, skin tightening, reduction of the appearance of wrinkles and pores, jowl-line lifting, double-chin reduction and cheek lifting. For those that desire a more V-shaped face, Dr. Tan adds that the treatments can also give you a more feminine and youthful look by lifting the jaw line and cheeks. It takes around one hour to treat the whole face. Patients may experience prickling, heat and slight discomfort during the procedure. According to Dr Tan, results appear gradually, peaking around two months aft er treatment, and last for about a year.
