The Go-To For Evening Wear: Romance Was Born

The Sydney label has been under the radar since 2005.

The Sydney label has been under the radar since 2005. With its modern romantic S/S ’19 RTW collection, now is its time for the big league.

Romance Was Born is not an Australian standard issue (kitschy and kooky). Started in 2005 by Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales, who became friends at fashion school East Sydney Technical College, its earlier inception involved oneoff couture pieces that were intensely detailed and embellished, delightfully quirky, and usually Australiana themed. Its supporters were private clients and Australian fashion museums and galleries.

A few seasons ago, the duo finally launched RTW with an emphasis on what they do very well: glorious and unique takes on cocktail, party and evening wear – the kind that works for any special occasion, even the Oscars. Think the romance of Valentino meets the kitsch of Gucci (without looking like one of its fashion characters), with a dash of Hedi Slimane’s ’80s disco references. – RT
