Vintage has been going two ways: geek-chic pretty at Gucci, or retro “ugly”. DKNY’s two creative directors opted for the latter. Maxwell and Dao-Yi, founders of their own sporty edgy label Public School, like their colleagues at Vetements, see cool in the unlikely, unexpected and nonconformist, and combines them with the functional qualities of the ’70s and the “ugliness” of the ’80s. White Van-like sneakers that resemble Scholls which nurses used to wear? Cool! A bucket bag that Ali McGraw’s character in Love Story would carry? Way cool! Boots that are a cross between Timberlands and the footwear of Swiss yodellers? Far out! A briefcaselike bag that our grandfathers carried? Hell, yah!
There’s something vintage about them. Prices: bags, $178- $1,198; shoes, $280-$890.
