L’Eau d’Issey EDT, $169 for 100ml

Since the legendary Japanese designer started making clothes in the 1970s, his aesthetic has been clear: simple and minimalist, yet intricate and technical. So it’s no surprise that when he launched L’Eau d’Issey – his first perfume – in 1992, he took the same approach. Inspired by water – simple and calming, yet powerful and dynamic – it’s one of his most iconic products. An aquatic floral, it opens with rose and lotus, has lily at its heart, and a base of sandalwood, cedar and ambrette. The result is as paradoxical as Miyake’s fashion designs, and water itself: discreet, tenacious, classic, modern, straightforward, and complex. The final part of the picture is the distinctive tall, slim, conical bottle.
