THE STYLING TRICK: PUNCHY POP LIDS AND NAILS
THE STYLING TRICK: PUNCHY POP LIDS AND NAILS
Going by the runways, your wardrobe should be awash in unexpected and vivid monochrome hues for Fall/Winter 2018. This beauty look is the appetiser equivalent (read: less commitment needed) to a full season of this ahead. From Marni to Sonia Rykiel, brands used a bold swash of colour over the eyes or nails to lend a fun, modern jolt to a simple, barefaced look. Want to be even more progressive? Do the same shade on both at once. – SK

THE STATEMENT ’DO: OFFBEAT GLAM SCHOOLGIRL
Step one: Get your hands on some decorative hair clips – the bigger and more ornate with crystals, pearls and gilded elements, the better. Step two: Slide one onto side or centre-parted locks Margot Tenenbaum style (ie. from the front). Step three: Repeat on other side of the head for symmetry. Step four (optional): Add one more to throw off the balance. The runway’s quirky take on pretty, pre-teen locks scores an “A” in creativity, drama, versatility and time management. If Spring/Summer 2018’s beauty trends were compiled into a yearbook, you’re looking at a contender for “Best Hair”. – SK

THE LOOK TO TRY: METALLIC LIP LINER
From ’20s screen siren Clara Bow to millennial beauty idol Kylie Jenner, lip liner has always been associated with daring, IDGAF kind of women. This particular approach to wearing it calls for ’90s Drew Barrymore/Naomi Campbell kind of guts. Think of it as the next evolution of the decade’s frosted puckers trend that’s been re-embraced by stylists as much as Kyliephiles in the past two years. And as it was then, it’s not meant to be blended in. Helping to champion it is kitschy pop accessories designer Yaz Bukey, whose second Shu Uemura tie-up focuses solely on the lips. The Magic Metallic Lip Liner stands out for its unexpected shades (gold, bronze, pink and gunmetal) and painterly liquid formula. Not for the demure or timid, but in these times, who wants to be? – SK

THE MODERN WOMAN’S MUSTHAVE: LANEIGE WATER BANK QUICK HYDRO PEN
The beauty about pens (the ones from the skincare or cosmetics department, not Popular): They’re portable, convenient to use, and often sleek-looking to boot. This recent launch ($14) by the Korean label is the first facial mist that we’ve seen in pen form. Like a retractable ballpoint, it delivers ingredients such as what the brand calls “green mineral water” – a filtered brew of vegetables and deep sea water said to flush skin with moisture – with a click. This why-didn’t-I-think-of-it-first design means that one can hydrate targeted areas without messing up the rest of the face that’s still feeling and looking fine. And, yes, it can be used over makeup. – SK
