1 Choose a uniform

Everyone has one, even if you change up your look daily. To identify yours, think of the items you tend to wear. I’m always partial to a pair of pants, so I try to incorporate it in my outfits, no matter the occasion. This helps me to be more focused when I shop, so I won’t buy things I would never wear. Also, make sure you can style the item into at least three looks and occasions. If you can’t, put that sheer sequinned robe back because it’s highly unlikely you’ll be attending a Clueless-themed party anytime soon.

2 Snap some selfies

Here’s a secret: fashion stylists always take Polaroid shots of outfits during fitting sessions before photoshoots. This lets them clearly see the fit and check for any details they might have missed out on. Start snapping away in the changing room then pore over the shots to see if the new items you intend to buy are working. The shots will also work as a catalogue to help you remember your purchases and prevent you from adding another black tee to the pile of 10 others at home.

3 Ask yourself if it’s what you want, what you really really want

Shopping can be a lot like online dating – there are just so many choices out there, and so you end up buying a bunch of “maybes” and “why nots” when you would have never bought these items in the offline world. The gratification you get from these purchases is only temporary and might cause you to miss out on your dream items, especially if they come with a hefty price tag. So practise some self-control, and add that money to your “must- haves” fund instead.
