With Christmas round the corner, you might find yourself in the mood to be generous. But why should giving back be limited to the holiday season – especially when it comes to the earth, which bestows all of its natural bounty and goodness to us, no matter what month it is? We take a trip to Innisfree’s Jeju House and the second Playgreen Festival in Seoul to find out how the brand puts a fresh take on being eco-friendly all year long.

1 USE A HANDKERCHIEF

Stop being the person whose daily post-lunch ritual involves begging for something to wipe your mouth with – jump on the green wagon by bringing your own hankie with you everywhere you go. Pros: they’re cute, reusable, and Lee Min Ho totally approves! Plus, they double as a cute accessory in a pinch – just make sure they’re clean first.

Made with recycled PET bottles, the Eco-Handkerchief campaign was launched by Innisfree in 2010.

2 GIVE PACKAGING NEW LIFE

While recycling is great, we also tried our hands at “upcycling”, which is repurposing an unwanted item to create an object of better value. For instance, you can turn an old cosmetics bottle into a cute light by adding battery-powered fairy lights. Alternatively, budding green fingers can stick a cute succulent in an old cosmetic jar, turning it into a mini planter. This tip packs a double whammy – not only do you repurpose an item that was destined for a landfill, you add a little touch of green into your life.

3 CUT DOWN ON CLUTTER

With everything now at our fingertips, it’s easy to click “buy” without thinking. But old-school eco-hacks shouldn’t be overlooked. Using tote bags instead of plastic ones when you’re shopping, and visiting a library instead of buying books to score new reads are still effective ways to go green and reduce your carbon footprint. As a bonus, you end up with less clutter at home!

HELLO, JEJU!

The Innisfree Jeju House in Seoul brings a taste of the island paradise to the Korean capital.

If you want to get in touch with Innisfree’s roots but don’t have time to fly to Jeju, hop on over to the cosy neighbourhood of Samcheong-dong instead. The two-storey flagship houses the store on the first floor, and the Green Café upstairs. On top of Innisfree’s range of products, you can also find store exclusives at the two year-old Jeju House, like the makeyour- own-mask Fresh Topping Pack bar and eco items made from natural Jeju materials. Hint: if you’re not sure what to get for friends back home, the DIY soap-making kit makes a perfect souvenir.
