Toners are often overlooked in the beauty regimen, but a good toner with ingredients that target your skin concerns can do wonders. Clarins’ Anti- Ageing Treatment Essences are developed to enhance your daily routine, effectively rehydrating the skin and preparing it for other products applied afterwards.

The Collection

The collection includes three toners: Multi- Active Treatment Essence, Extra-Firming Treatment Essence and Super Restorative Treatment Essence. Created for premature, semi-mature and mature skin respectively, the essences are formulated with different plant extracts to meet specific needs and bring back the youthful appearance.

The Multi-Active Treatment Essence is a revitalising, gentle concoction packed with teasel extract and acerola seed extract, which boost radiance and suppleness. The Extra-Firming Treatment Essence reinforces skin structure thanks to lemon thyme and green banana extracts, while fig extract and hyaluronic acid help reduce fine lines by preventing excessive moisture loss.

For mature skin, the Super Restorative Treatment Essence features Pueraria lobata extract to encourage collagen production, while ginseng and green coffee extracts improve dull skin. The texture of this toner feels richer than the other two, but it’s easily absorbed and effectively plumps and replenishes the skin.

The Science

As we age, our skin’s structure also changes leading to different challenges in anti- ageing. One ever-present issue is the skin’s natural function – to protect us from external aggressions, its outermost layer, the stratum corneum, acts as a physical barrier, blocking not only bacteria and pollutants but also cosmetic molecules from skincare products.

In semi-mature skin, its water holding capacity begins to decline as well. While moisture levels in the deeper skin layers remain high, the upper layers’ cells are dehydrated. This creates an imbalance and difficulty in diffusing active ingredients from the skin surface to the dermis. And when the skin continues to age, epidermal cell renewal significantly slows, which results in the thickening of the stratum corneum, further decreasing skin permeability.

So unless the skin is properly prepped at the beginning of an anti-ageing routine, it can’t fully benefit from the products. Clarins’ toners target these issues through emollient, moisturising and exfoliating actions, allowing cosmetic molecules to penetrate the skin layers more easily.

Pro Tip

Like with any toner, the quickest way to apply the Treatment Essences is with a cotton pad after cleansing. But since the cotton pad will absorb some of the essence, it’s recommended to dab onto skin with clean fingers for 20 seconds.

There is also a secret use for the Anti- Ageing Treatment Essences – you can create sheet masks with them! Simply soak a piece of mask paper in the essence that suits the state of your skin, then put it on the face for 10 minutes. Do it once to twice a week for best results. Note that as the essences’ textures slightly differ, different types of mask paper should be used: for the Super Restorative Treatment Essence, Clarins’ Mask Paper is best, whereas the Capsule Mask Paper is more suitable for the Multi-Active and Extra-Firming Treatment Essences.
