Turning up your metabolism may be as simple as having salmon for dinner. In a study at Kyoto University in Japan, animals that ate food that contained fish oil gained 15 to 25 per cent less body fat than those on a different diet.

Eating oily fish helps your white fat cells, which store extra calories, turn into beige or brown fat cells, which actually burn energy. The fish oil activates receptors in the digestive system that help rev fat metabolism, the researchers found.
