Think Kilometres, Not Minutes

Headed out for a run? Aim for a specifi c distance rather than a length of time to make sure you don’t shortchange your workout, suggests new research presented at the American College of Sports Medicine’s most recent annual meeting. In the study, one group of exercisers was instructed to walk or run 30 minutes a day and increase that to 60 minutes a day. Another group was given a daily distance goal equivalent to calories burned. The distance group lost about 4kg, while the time group gained a couple. “People tend to inadvertently overestimate the time they actually spend exercising,” explains lead study author Cody Morris. But distance, on the other hand, is non-negotiable, so you get the full body benefits.

IT FEELS EXTRA AMAZING Working out raises your level of testosterone, which boosts desire and helps increase circulation, making your clitoris and vaginal area more sensitive and receptive to touch, says sex therapist Tiffanie Davis Henry and co-host of TLC’s All About Sex.

YOU’LL FEEL INCREDIBLE Thanks to that same testosterone kick, you will radiate confidence. “Most of us feel really good about our bodies after exercising, and sex is more fun when we’re not worried about how we look,” Tiffanie says.

IT TURNS UP THE BURN The longer you keep your heart rate up after an intense gym session, the more calories you’ll continue to burn. Plus, sex can torch up to 150 calories on its own, says Tiffanie.

IT PROLONGS THE HIGH “Your endorphins are already flowing postworkout, and that euphoric feeling is extended while you have sex,” says Tiffanie. Being intimate with your man also prompts the release of feel-good neurotransmitters, so your high is stronger and even longer lasting.

Those who text or chat while running reduced the intensity of their exercise, according to new findings in the journal Plos One. Switch to airplane mode and stick to your playlist instead. In fact, runners who used their smartphones solely to listen to music actually enjoyed their workout, ran about 0.8kmh faster, and burned more calories than those who went unplugged.
