My Reading Room

Everyone has a different body shape. You may not be overweight, but no matter how you maintain a balanced diet and do regular exercise, you can’t seem to get rid of cellulite and fat on your hips. Or you’re slim, but are bothered by bra bulge and a less-than firm belly. And as you age, you may have sagging skin over your upper arms, face, neck and decolletage, even your hands, knees and elbows.

No matter what your face or body woes, BTL Aesthetics’ latest non-invasive device, the Exilis Ultra 360, tackles pockets of fat and loose skin. An upgrade of the Exilis Elite that only uses radio-frequency (RF) energy, the Exilis Ultra 360 delivers both focused, continuous monopolar RF technology and microvibration energy at the same time to the target areas. According to BTL Aesthetics, a subsidiary of BTL Industries – a medical equipment manufacturer based in the UK – this heats up treated areas faster to boost collagen and elastin production, tighten slackened skin, and destroy fat cells.

The device has two applicators: a bigger one for the body, to tackle fat; and a smaller one with four applicator tips that can be used interchangeably to treat more than 20 areas, including the face, body and vagina. The smaller applicator is said to reduce the look of wrinkles on the forehead and the eye and lip areas, as it makes skin look and feel smoother, tighter and firmer.

How does the treatment go? For a start, no numbing cream is needed. A gel is applied over the target area so the applicator can move smoothly over the skin. The therapist or doctor moves the applicator against your skin, with the temperature set at 41-43 deg C.

The device is designed to keep the skin surface cool while delivering uniform heat energy to the deeper skin layers. If you feel that it’s too hot during the treatment, the therapist or doctor can reduce the temperature to a more comfortable level. One session takes around 30 minutes. The treated skin area may feel warm and look red afterwards, and may stay that way for around 30 minutes. According to BTL, apart from these effects, there is no downtime for this treatment, and you can return to your daily activities right after.

In Singapore, the treatment is available at Privé Clinic. While you may see visible improvements after one session, results will typically improve further over three months of follow-up sessions. The number of sessions that is best for you will depend on your individual needs.
