Montblanc’s latest Patron of Art Edition honours the Aztec Empire.
Elevating a writing instrument to a cultural icon is no simple task – yet Montblanc has been doing this for 28 years, with its Montblanc Patron of Art Edition collection. It honours a historical patron of the arts annually and, this year, the attention is on Moctezuma I (1398-1469), ruler of the Aztec Empire during its golden age.
The brand has created four limited editions to celebrate the legacy of a ruler who shaped the rich culture of the Aztecs, a Mesoamerican civilisation. The Limited Edition 888 is decorated in the royal colours of turquoise and carmine red, with 18K gold fittings.
The striking sterling silver cap features engravings of Aztec weaponry and ornaments, while the lacquered barrel has a pattern reminiscent of Moctezuma I’s cloak, a symbol of his high rank.
Topping it off is a spear-shaped clip set with green jade, and a handcrafted solid gold nib adorned with the Aztec glyph for the capital city of Tenochtitlan: a three-armed cactus with a royal diadem and two scrolls.
Created in Montblanc’s Artisan Atelier, the writing instruments are as much works of art as they are a tribute to the arts.
