Together as one.

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

“The test of a civilisation is the way that it cares for its helpless members.” This quote by American novelist Pearl S. Buck rings true, especially now during this pandemic, when the effects of the virus are felt differently by different classes of society. For those of us who are still blessed to have a roof over our heads, a warm bed to sleep in and the comfort of knowing that our next meal is secure, Covid-19 is, for all intents and purposes, an annoying stain in our lives.

But, there are those out there whose lives have been ravaged by the virus, either financially or otherwise. So, we salute the leaders in Singapore who chose to help, whether through their own efforts or by collaborating with others to create organisations dedicated to easing the struggle of the less fortunate.

It’s the same story for Ng Choon-Peng, the CEO and co-founder of Immunoscape, a biotech company that is working with a number of pharmaceutical companies to formulate a Covid-19 vaccine. Through him, I learned the value of a life and the concept of balancing the social good of medicine with business considerations. It’s not an easy scale to manage, but Ng is doing an excellent job.

Enjoy the issue.
