Swim Like A Mermaid.
My Reading Room
Try: Lessons at the Singapore Mermaid School.

For the last three years, professional mermaid Syrena has been teaching mermaid and merman wannabes how to swim gracefully through the water. Her course is recommended for boys and girls aged five years and up. As long as your little one can swim one lap unassisted (without a tail) and tread water for 10 seconds, she is eligible. She need not be an excellent swimmer, as flotation aids will be provided in the first few lessons and she will also be taught swimming basics.

The Singapore Mermaid School comprises four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with each level having a different physical focus. Everyone starts out at the Bronze level; as your child progresses, she will learn more advanced mermaid swim strokes, techniques and tricks.

Where: Swish Swimming @ Dempsey, #01-08, 72 Loewen Road.

When: Most weekday evenings, or weekend afternoons and evenings. Visit www.themermaidsyrena.com for the schedule.

Learn Bos saball.
My Reading Room
Try: Bossaball at The School of Bossaball.

Created in 2004, this sport fuses soccer, volleyball, the Brazilian martial art capoeira and gymnastics. It’s played on an inflatable “court” featuring a trampoline on each side. Latin American music, in particular, a samba-influenced type of music called bossa nova, sets the rhythm of the game.

Requiring two teams of four to five players each, the goal is for each team to ground the ball on the opponent’s side of the court. Points are earned in a couple of ways, such as when the ball hits the opponent’s playing area.

The School of Bossaball offers this activity at a sheltered indoor court. Get a group of children together for a session; the instructors will teach them the rules of the game and how to navigate their way around the inflatable court.

Where: Yuying Secondary School, 47 Hougang Avenue 1.

When: Sat, 9am-5pm.

Who: For kids aged 10 and up.

How much: A private group session lasts 1.5 hours and starts at $525 for 10 to 20 people. To register, e-mail info@bossaball.com.sg, visit www.bossaball.com.sg or call 6100-6292.

Play Games in a Bubble Suit.

This fun activity sees players wearing a durable plastic bubble suit made up of inner and outer spheres. When a bubble suit is fully inflated, there will be a thick layer of air between the inner sphere – which securely houses your child – and the outer sphere that sits on the ground or pitch.

For safety purposes, the inner sphere features straps that go around the body, as well as handles to hold on to. The kid suits are 1.2m in diameter.

With his suit on, your child can choose from games like Bubble Bump Soccer, Bubble Bump Invasion, Bubble Bump Human Bowling Ball, and more. Professional facilitators will be on hand to teach him how to play these games. Gather a group of your child’s friends and classmates, and make a day of it.
