Housed within an industrial estate, the interiors of For The Common Goods are a far cry from the dull and run-down look of the buildings around it. Vibrant colours and textures keep the eye moving as you step into the retail space.

Founders and husband-wife duo Tommy and Angie Huang recently moved in to join Pickjunction — a community of furniture and home-furnishing brands housed under one roof to provide a one-stop shopping experience for consumers. The couple have always been advocates of good design at affordable prices, and believe in supporting local craftsmen and designers to encourage sustainability within the industry.

The opportunity to start For The Common Goods arose in 2014, after a chance meeting with Abie Abdillah, designer and founder of contemporary rattan furniture brand Studio Hiji from Indonesia. They were inspired by his work and wanted NOW NOW to introduce him to the Singapore market. Now, Studio Hiji’s Pretzel bench sits as a centrepiece in the showroom, and even doubles as a coffee table base.

Since then, For The Common Goods has expanded and currently stocks items from five brands, namely Everyday Studio, PDM Brand, Studio Hiji, Vive, and Fred and Bobo – a cushion design studio which Angie runs. It started as a hobby, before she soon realised the increasing interest in the pieces she made. Now, Fred and Bobo offers a wide selection, from botanical-printed floor pillows, to throw pillows with frills, and even cushions made with vintage fabrics. Angie does customised orders, too, and has even ventured into making beanbag seats.

Whether it’s copper and brass hanging lamps from the Netherlands-based Vive, or PDM Brand’s geometric-patterned woven rugs, the duo work closely with designers and craftsmen to better understand the design process, while ensuring that the selection at For The Common Goods comes at a reasonable price, in line with their philosophy of keeping good design accessible.
