Your dog’s acting out… who do you call?

It might be time to get a dog whisperer in, or perhaps your pooch just needs good old-fashioned discipline. Either way, you need to know who to call, and when.

DOG TRAINER

He’ll expand your dog’s “vocabulary”

“Trainers specialise in cultivating particular skills in dogs, like obedience, agility, search and rescue,” says Urban K9 co-founder Ethan Loke. “A dog may be well trained and able to perform tricks, yet display bad manners with humans or other dogs.”

Group classes

Together with other dogs, yours will get toilet-training, and learn to obey commands – like how to walk to heel.

What it’ll cost you

A weekly basic obedience class – stretching over six weeks – at The Dog Listener Consultancy will cost you $350.

DOG BEHAVIOURIST

He’ll psycho-analyse your pooch

“Behaviourists treat dogs that exhibit behaviour traits which are out of the norm,” explains Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD) president Ricky Yeo, a trained dog behaviourist. Whether the dog is aggressive, fearful or hyperactive, the behaviourist gets to the root of the problem.

Solo consults

Done at home so the behaviourist can observe the triggers (including you, the owner). He then tailors a customised programme to manage the issues.

What it’ll cost you

Three two-hour sessions over two months cost $450. You give weekly updates between sessions, so the behaviourist can tweak the programme, if needed.
