Fermented food such as miso, sake and soya sauce have long been staples in the Japanese diet. They are created when microorganisms are introduced to or grow in food, producing a variety of acids and alcohols. This metabolic process – known as fermentation – helps preserve food and makes them more digestible. It also creates beneficial substances such as enzymes, vitamins, lactic acid and probiotics.
Some of these substances – such as lactic acid, which has skin-softening, brightening and exfoliating properties – can also be used in skincare. Recognising this, Japanese beauty brand ORBIS – who believes that oil- free skincare is the key to healthy skin and takes a holistic approach to beauty – created its latest offering: Night Time Pack Koubijin ($48 for 65g), which harnesses the benefits of fermentation to help you get “mochi-like” skin that is amazingly soft and supple.
A firm friend
At the heart of this leave-on cream mask are several key ingredients, including sake, a fermented rice liquor; fermented soya milk; and bread-yeast-derived hydrolysed yeast.
The first, made from quality Yamada Nishiki rice, is rich in amino acids with superior moisture- retention capabilities. The second reportedly works to suppress melanin production, reduce pigmentation and overall dullness, and clarify skin (Cleopatra supposedly took daily sour milk baths to reap these benefits!).
The third is rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals to promote the production of collagen which is essential for soft, plump skin.
The mask also has low-molecular- weight hyaluronic acid, which can deeply penetrate skin to boost the skin’s hydration and elasticity.
Working in tandem with these are Moisture Wrapping Ingredients, said to seal in the goodness of your other skincare and boost their effectiveness.
