My Reading Room

Dear Singapore,

What is strength?

It is not about sheer muscle or power. To me, strength is about the determination and persistence to never give up – even when the odds are stacked against you.

Strength is about conditioning your mind and body to prepare for the toughest situation during a fight. I train for at least five to six hours a day, seven days a week, leading up to a fight.

Strength also comes from the will to win my fights and not succumb to self-doubt or weakness. There are moments when I am exhausted and I think to myself: “Why am I putting myself through this?”

And then I remember: I do this because this is what I love to do; this is what I was born to do.

I’ve never been afraid to get hit. I never give up without a fight even when the opponent is bigger and stronger.

I get hit, I get back up. I get hit harder, I get back up faster. We are stronger than we think.

Keep calm, build your strength, wait for your chance to turn the fight in your favour. That’s why tenacity is the key to my strength.

On May 26, 2017, I defended my title a second time and emerged the One Championship Atomweight World Champion at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

I am Angela Lee, a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and ONE Atomweight World Champion.
