Africa as seen through the eyes of Kim Jones.

My Reading Room

Africa holds a special place in Kim Jones’ heart. It’s where he grew up, and Jones famously used the red-and-blue Masai checks as a graphic leitmotif for his debut as Artistic Director of Men’s ready-to-wear at Louis Vuitton five years ago. The designer returned to Africa’s vast plains for spring/summer 2017, and along the way he conjured another strong showing that evoked tales of an exotic journey through the continent. A standout from Jones’ new sojourn? This see- through trunk crafted from durable Perspex, then finished with sleek palladium for extra edge. Featuring a giraffe illustration by British artists and brothers Jake and Dinos Chapman, the trunk doubles up as a backpack with the addition of two shoulder straps, its duo function a perfect mirror of Jones’ love affair with Africa and Vuitton’s heritage in travel.
